    Teachers' recognition of school bullying according to background variables and type of bullying

    How teachers identify and judge school bullying may affect their willingness to intervene in bullying situations and influence their strategies for doing so. This study aimed to investigate whether there were significant differences in teachers' identification of bullying incidents according to background variables (gender, teaching experience, and education level). The participants of this study were 150 primary school and middle school teachers in Taiwan, A 24-item Recognition of Bullying incidents Questionnaire (RBIQ) was used in this study to explore whether teachers can identify physical, verbal, and relational scenarios as bullying or non-bullying incidents. A mixed-model two way ANOVA was used to analyze this data. Results revealed that teachers' teaching experiences significantly interacted with behavioral types, and teachers' education levels also sigm candy interacted with behavioral types. In addition, no gender differences in the identification of bullying were observed. Overall, teachers were more likely to identifi physical bullying incidents than relational ones. The results of this study suggest that teachers should participate in training to help them identify bullying incidents, particularly when these involve relational bullying

    A Neural Network Architecture for Syntax Analysis

    Artificial neural networks (ANNs), due to their inherent parallelism and potential fault tolerance, offer an attractive paradigm for robust and efficient implementations of syntax analyzers. This paper proposes a modular neural network architecture for syntax analysis on continuous input stream of characters. The components of the proposed architecture include neural network designs for a stack, a lexical analyzer, a grammar parser and a parse tree construction module. The proposed NN stack allows simulation of a stack of large depth, needs no training, and hence is not application-specific. The proposed NN lexical analyzer provides a relatively efficient and high performance alternative to current computer systems for lexical analysis especially in natural language processing applications. The proposed NN parser generates parse trees by parsing strings from widely used subsets of deterministic context-free languages (generated by LR grammars). The estimated performance of the proposed neural network architecture (based on current CMOS VLSI technology) for syntax analysis is compared with that of commonly used approaches to syntax analysis in current computer systems. The results of this performance comparison suggest that the proposed neural network architecture offers an attractive approach for syntax analysis in a wide range of practical applications such as programming language compilation and natural language processing

    How to promote bike tourism globally

    Purpose – The main purpose of this study is to find ways on how to promote bike tourism globally, and use Taiwan as a model to explore this aspect. Design – The development of the study structure involved brainstorming and the assistance of an expert panel. The study framework is composed of 7 aspects with 8-12 subitems each. Methodology – The opinions of experts were gathered through a questionnaire survey. Afterwards, the CLPEM (Control Limits Performance Evaluation Method) was adopted to determine the means to promote bike tourism. Findings – The results show how the government and operators could prioritize service enhancements and improvements such as "bike rental at one station with drop off at another designated location, nanny vans to accommodate bike tourists, bike tourist information center, training for bike tour guides who can provide practical and historical knowledge for tourists, creative bike touring routes depending on the rider’s abilities, local friendly hospitality for riders, and comprehensive travel insurance policies".     Communications and Interfaces in Implementation of e-Bid System: A Case Study for Governmental Procurement in EC

    While the computer network is very popular in many applications, anything is always electronically rebuilt to pursue higher value. This is an era of information technology, computers and networks are linked together to reform the society, all fields of business administration are generally reengineering through the adoption of information and technology. One of the new requirements is the bid system operated in Internets. Because the huge cost and inconvenience in managing paper-based bid system, e-bid system is then required. A research team of professors is formed and get the grant from National Science Council (NSC) to design and implement the e-bid system for three years. The objective is to develop an e-bid system with features of fairness, justice and opening. This paper explains overall design of the e-bid system; all tasks in development of e-bid system are partitioned to five subprojects. The functions of interfaces and communications are in charge by us, we have the primary concern to design and implement an easy and friendly operational interfaces and secure communications for external users. With three basic characteristics of the proposed e-bid system, we hope that the proposed e-bid system may be applicable for all governmental procurements

    The restoration of sediment-related disasters and driftwood from national forest in Taiwan caused by Typhoon Morakot in 2009

    The number and area of new landslide, according to the interpreted SPOT images, caused by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 is estimated as 30,223 and 43,996 ha, respectively. The new landslide area in 2009 increased by about 16,392 ha in comparison with the landslide area in 2008. The heavy rainfall with a return period well over 200 years during Typhoon Morakot centralized in southwestern and southeastern Taiwan, and that also resulted in serious landslide disasters in national forest. Four forest working circles, including Chishan, Laonong, Pintung, and Dawu, are the most serious landslide zones with the landslide ratio over 8.0%. The Forestry Bureau assesses and ranks the seriousness of the disasters by using slope, the number of protected objects, the distance from the disaster to the protected objects to execute the restoration of sediment disasters and landslide in national forest. Due to the most torrential rain in the past 50 years caused by Typhoon Morakot, a large number of trees in the mountain area were destroyed. They became the driftwood, with a total weight of about 1.52 million tons, which ended up at the farmlands and ports. In order to recover agricultural products and livelihoods, Forestry Bureau made strategy for disaster prevention and reduction. Based on the strategy, Forestry Bureau sweeps away the driftwood by estimating its distribution, overcomes the issues caused by the heavy rainfall disaster, and helps the victims to recover their life

    Effects of orthographic consistency and homophone density on Chinese spoken word recognition

    Studies of alphabetic language have shown that orthographic knowledge influences phonological processing during spoken word recognition. This study utilized the Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) to differentiate two types of phonology-to-orthography (P-to-O) mapping consistencies in Chinese, namely homophone density and orthographic consistency. The ERP data revealed an orthographic consistency effect in the frontal-centrally distributed N400, and a homophone density effect in central-posteriorly distributed late positive component (LPC). Further source analyses using the standardized low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) demonstrated that the orthographic effect was not only localized in the frontal and temporal-parietal regions for phonological processing, but also in the posterior visual cortex for orthographic processing, while the homophone density effect was found in middle temporal gyrus for lexical-semantic selection, and in the temporal-occipital junction for orthographic processing. These results suggest that orthographic information not only shapes the nature of phonological representations, but may also be activated during on-line spoken word recognition
